Home sweet home...

I'm back. Just touched down not too long ago. Had a great trip. Unfortunately, the dry and cold weather wrecked havoc on my lips. They are all dry, cracked and swollen now. So if you happen to see me in the next few days, please don't be alarmed, I do not have HFMD or something...

But I had a good rest, and was honestly a little sad to leave the country. But then, there is no place like home. It is quite amazing to think about it; I woke up in Hunter Valley surrounded by vineyards early this morning, and now I am at home at my familiar table thousands of miles from where I started the day. My head is really swirling now...

I guess I needed to leave the business of the country and find some rest. It has been a tough year so far, one of the worse for me honestly. And I think I really needed the rest. But I am home now and the days ahead are packed! VCF LPC, YM Leaders Retreat, One Purpose Camp followed by Go Forth. And squeezed in between that, I will be leading worship at the CCR BB Camp and at the LPC. And the TTC gig rehearsal somewhere in there as well. To top it all off, results are due on Tuesday. Sounds fun! Well, I truly am home.

Saw Ryan post the One Purpose Camp logos. I thought I post the camp theme-song. Got the inspirition to use this song from an obvious place. The VCF FoC 2004! Anyway, here it is; it's called "One Pure and Holy Passion". My prayer is that each and everyone who attends the camp, whether they are Christian or not, find a purpose in their life.

One Pure and Holy Passion

Give me one pure and holy passion
Give me one magnificent obsession
Give me one glorious ambition for my life
To know and follow hard after You

To know and follow hard after You
To grow as Your disciple in the truth
This world is empty pale and poor
Compared to knowing You my Lord
Lead me on and I will run after You
Lead me on and I will run after You

For a run-down of my trip. Highlight.

Day 1. Plane ride to Sydney was pretty smooth. Watched "Phantom of the Opera" on the plane. Maybe that wasn't such a good idea to watch that after all. Some things, I rather forget. But anyway, arrived in Sydney at 5am in the morning, got the rental car and drove to the city. Reached the city about 7am plus. And first thing we did was to have Porridge breakfast in Chinatown?!?! Could not book into our hotel yet, so we did some standard sightseeing. Went to the Darling Harbour and the Opera House and The Rocks for lunch. Had a nice Italian lunch there. After that we were finally able to check in and get some much needed rest. That evening, met up with my cousins who are supposed to be studying in Sydney. Had a Japanese dinner at this small restaurant near UNSW. After that we went for dessert, woah... the Ice cream I had was HUGE! Will post a pic some other time!

Day 2. Went to Hillsongs Church at the Hills for service. Very interesting. And the compound of their church is huge! And I mean HUGE! Had a Krispe Kreme Donut for breakfast over there. Now I know why everyone asked me to bring those things home, they are sinful! Went to a place called Balmain for lunch, at some fish shop. Nice and simple. Was pretty tired after that, went back to the hotel to sleep. My parent's brought dinner back for me after that, a huge Kebab and Pizza.

Day 3. Had breakfast at the hotel's coffeehouse. Then we set off for the Blue mountains which are due west of Sydney. Along the way, we stopped at the Sydney Olympic Village and Featherdale Wildlife Park. Wombats are really cute. As a result of a seriously long drive, we missed lunch but had an early dinner. We stayed at a placed called Katoomba, at a nice guest house over there. Went to see the 3 Sister's rock formation. And went to take the scenic railway and cable car rides. Incredible view. Had dinner at a Chinese restaurant somewhere in Katoomba. Went back to the Guest House and I watched a movie, "Dune". Been wanting to watch it again for some time now; now that I understand the story.

Day 4. Woke up had breakfast at the guest house. Then went to the Jenolan Caves. Been there before, but this time they had the whole lighting system and tour revised. So it was a lot more interesting! Had a sandwhich lunch at the Jenolan Caves. Made our way back to Katoomba via the "scenic route" and stopped at a town called Leura along the way. Had dinner at a local pizza joint that night.

Day 5. Woke up even earlier for an even longer drive to Hunter valley, which is due north of Sydney. So if you can visualise, Hunter Valley is due north, Blue Mountains is due west, the fastest route should be to travel along the hypotenuse of this right angled triangle right? But no! There is no such route, so we had to travel back to Sydney and then north again. Super long drive. Started early in the morning and had a Macdonalds breakfast along the way. Then stopped at a city called Newcastle for lunch. Just had pies and sandwhiches at a foodcourt there. Then we shot to a place called Cessnock to try and look for accomadation. But there wasn't any! And the Sun was setting, so we drove into the vineyard regions and managed to find a really great place to stay at some lodge over there. Had dinner at the lodge's Italian Restaurant. NOW THAT WAS A DINNER TO REMEMBER!

Day 6. Drove around the place looking at the vineyards and sampling some wines and cheeses. Had lunch at the Hunter Valley Village. Had a lagsane and a pie. Nice. Finished the meal with Chocolate Fondue. (Yup, gym sessions need to start next week.) Drove around to more vineyards and had dinner at another Italian restaurant. Also another meal to remember! That was the last night there.

Day 7. By this time my lips are in really terrible condition. Drove back to Sydney city area, had a dim sum lunch then headed off to the airport. 7 hours flight home. It was a bumpy ride. The humidity is much better for my lips, and they are starting to heal. But they are still painful. Well, home sweet home and the mad rush of the June Holidays is going to start. Thank God I will have a full month after that to rest even more. But then again, I may need to go to the library and do research for honours thesis.

Greetings from Sydney...

I am using the internet connection from my hotel room to blog this. The weather here is a fantastic 14 degrees Celsius in the evenings and 18 in the afternoons. But even then, I still think that there is no place like home.

Did some standard sightseeing when I first arrived; and yesterday night (Saturday) met up with my cousins who are based in Sydney for dinner and dessert. Visited Hillsong Church this morning; interesting, will share more with the team when I return. In fact, for those who will be at the leadership retreat, I think I would want to share something as well; something I learned.

Probably won’t be able to update anymore till I return; will be going to the Blue Mountains on Monday. The temperature there is even colder!

one post before the road...

Will be leaving for Sydney in a few hours time. Don't really know when is the next time I will blog again. So I've decided to post this one just before leaving.

Wrote this on Shaun's tagboard. I have no idea where I got the inspiration from, but it was a very "me" kind of post. (becuase it has to do with math!)

The mistake a lot of people make in math is that they try to get everything done in as few steps as possible. And as a result they loose marks. I have observed that this seems to be the case especially among the current batch of secondary school students. Especially among the few whom I have tutored; always looking for a "shortcut".

Well, all I can say is, stop looking for one. When you go through the tedious process of writing all the steps down, rather than working it mentally in your head, you will see an entirely different picture. I guess that is why primary school kids are taught to use models in their math.

A series of small and simple steps is a lot easier to understand than a single whole complicated mess. And like one of you told me, "you make it look so simple!". The truth is, it is simple; after I broke the problem down into like 10 smaller steps right?

At higher level, the whole point in mathematics is to develop a rigourous argument (or proof). This usually involved splitting a single proof into smaller steps and solving each smaller step. And using the combined results to give the full theorem. It's done this way so that the argument is irrefutable.

But more importantly, I think this lesson can be applied to our Christian faith as well. Earning salvation can be done by a simple descision and an honest prayer. But working out that salvation is tedious process of aches and pains.

But, instead of working out through the trials and temptations that come our way, we try to take short cuts; and as a result, we loose marks. We don't get the full picture and we naturally feel incomplete.

"Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing." - James 1:2-4

Times of trials and testing will come. One is on its way for the Youth Ministry. In fact, it has already begun. But let's take it head on, and with pure joy. For at the end of it, we will reap a greater harvest! Let take it one smalle step at a time.

Here is the most updated picture of the building:

Our new building is being built one small step at a time. One floor at a time. But it will be ready soon. So in the same way, let's let the master Builder build our faith as well.

PS: Now I remember where I got the inspiration from, it was from Shaun's post about his math results! :)

You are so faithful

It's raining like mad here now in Singapore. Was a hot day, somehow ended up raining so crazily. Typical Singapore weather. Just came home from Concert of Prayer. Was actually quite encouraged by what I saw. But well, tomorrow is going to be a whole new day; probably going to be a shocker for a few. But well, God is faithful. I believe I posted some time in January about the rain. Here is a song that is running in my head now. It speaks of God's faithfulness to us.

Like the sun, that rises everyday
You are so faithful, dear Lord You're so faithful
Like the rain that You bring
And every breath that I breathe
You are so faithful O Lord

Like a rose, that comes alive every spring
You are so faithful, dear Lord You're so faithful
Like the life that You give
To every beat of my heart
You are so faithful O Lord

I see the cross and the price You had to pay
I see the blood that washed my sins away

In the midst of the storm
Through the wind and the waves
You'll still be faithful
O Lord You are faithful
When the stars refuse to shine
And time is no more
You'll still be faithful
You'll still be faithful O Lord

This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. When the Holy Spirit was poured out upon man. That is God's faithfulness to us. And through it all, His Word will never fail.

Concert of Prayer

Time: 7.30pm
Venue: Aldersgate Hall
Date: 14 May 2005 (Saturday)

There will not be any YM this coming week, however, we should continue to pray for the YM as we do every Sunday morning. So, let's all come together this Saturday evening for a time of praise and worship and prayer!

Many of us feel tired and dry and worn out. All the more we need to pray and interceed for the YM. So let's take the effort to come down to church this weekend.

Consuming Fire
There must be more than this
O breath of God, come breathe within
There must be more than this
Spirit of God we wait for You
Fill us anew we pray
Fill us anew we pray

Consuming fire, fan into flame
A passion for Your name
Spirit of God, fall in this place
Lord have Your way
Lord have Your way

Come like a rushing wind
Clothe us from power from on high
Now set the captives free
Leave us abandoned to Your praise
Lord let Your glory fall
Lord let Your glory fall

Stir it up in our hearts Lord
Stir it up in our hearts Lord
Stir it up in our hearts Lord
A passion for Your Name

Survey Results

These are the results of the survey conducted in church over the weekend. Quite sombering, unfortuantely. These are only the raw results. I will do an analysis another day.

Sample Size: 60
Male: 24
Female: 36

Age Ranges:
13-14: 27
15-16:12
17up: 21

Question 1: Which of the follwoing phrases (exact phrases) refer to Jesus, God or the Holy Spirit in the Bible?

The Following appear in the Bible and refer to Jesus, God the Father or the Holy Spirit:
-Rose of Sharon (Song of Solomon 2:1)
-Bright and morning star (Revelations 22:16)
-Man of Sorrows (Isaiah 53:3)
-Ancient of Days (Daniel 7:9)
-Lion of the Tribe of Judah (Revelations 5:5)

-"Son of the Dawn" appears in the Bible. But refers to Satan. (Isaiah 14:12)

The following DO NOT appear in the Bible as an exact phrase
-Darling of Heaven
-King of Majesty
-Comforter to the lonely
-Tower of refuge and strength
-Friend in High Places

RESPONSES:
- King of Majesty: 81.7% (49)
- Tower of refuge and strength: 63.3% (38)
- Bright and morning star: 35% (21)
- Comforter to the lonely: 35% (21)
- Darling of heaven: 31.7% (19)
- Friend in High places: 28.3% (17)
- Ancient of days: 28.4% (17)
- Lion of the tribe of Judah: 21.6% (13)
- Son of the Dawn: 13.3% (8)
- Man of sorrows: 11.6% (7)
- Rose of Sharon: 8.3% (5)

Question 2: Which of the following phrases can be found in the Bible?

Only the following can be found in the Bible:

He who spares the rod hates his son - Proverbs 13:24

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good - Psalms 107:1

These cannot be found in the Bible:
-Crown Him with many crowns
-Like a rose trampled on the ground
-God is good all the time
-Read your Bible pray everyday

RESPONSES:
- Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good: 80% (48)
- God is good, all the time: 46.7% (28)
- Crown Him with many crowns: 36.7% (22)
- He who spares the rod hates his son: 30% (18)
- Like a rose trampled on the ground: 28.3% (17)
- Read your Bible pray everyday: 26.7% (16)

Question 3:
The 3 verses are:

Jesus said, “I am The Way, The Truth and The Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” - John 14:6

Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. - Psalm 96:11

Such is the generation who seek Him, who seek Your face, O God of Jacob. Selah. - Psalm 24:6

Most of the responses were blank except for the first verse. Most answered correctly, or at least got the idea. Suprisingly, (and thankfully) there wasn't any response that went, "live by faith and not by sight" (there was 1, but it was liquid-papered out).

Another interesting observation. There was actually a mistake in the first question. The phrase was printed as "the Way, the Truth and the Light". Only Jessica and Nat Pang's SG pointed it out! (even I missed it!)

An interesting overservation not related to the survey: Natalie Pang's blog has overtaken the VCF BCE Blog as the top refering site to this blog!

about contemporary worship

Taken from a friend's blog...

i just bought united live's latest album, look to you a few days ago. i was just watching the complimentary dvd and i was struck by the entire process marty sampson, joel houston and gang went through to get the album produced.

while i always enjoyed the nifty electric guitar rifts and their super catchy melodies, somehow or rather the lyrics just don't quite cut it for me. it's super i-centric and the meaning is lost behind the inherent borderline shallow-ness. there are exceptions of course, but when i heard darlene zschech tell the entire united live team to "let go of their gifts..and let God take over" just before their worship and creative arts meeting, my scepticism began to ebb.

the songs on the album were actually birthed from the synergy and prayer and the collective annointing of the Holy Spirit from a ministry-wide gathering like this. and darlene zschech reminded them that "sometimes we rely on our gifts too much and we become too confident...and if we don't depend on Him and not let God come through us, that's when we're gonna drown." i don't know about you, but to me, this is utterly and literally "looking to Him."

the dvd is the filming of the recording of this live worship album where a whole bunch of young people, probably aged 15 upwards to the early 20's were having fun worshipping God. but deep down inside me, i wondered how on earth is it possible to praise and worship when people were just apparently so busy making merry, jumping, stomping their feet to the drum beat and body surfing at one stage. scenes that you would normally associate with rock concerts like woodstock - except minus the violence that usually precedes and proceeds the event.

then it struck me the extent of popular culture's effect on the music and culture of christian youths - not just down under australia, but here in singapore as well. and how a youth congregation is considered "dead" if they are usually not "lively" during worship. (read: an average sunday heartbeat service)

don't get me wrong. i am probably one of those people who would jump and make merry. but i think the larger implicit/explicit message (depending on how perceptive you are to such things) is what constitutes our heart of worship.

the rock music is a mere fascade to what is something greater. it is a hook, a means to attract the young people of this age to something greater. for a generation that has been lamblasted by the mediated world of advertising and marketing that zooms in on them, (go watch "the merchants of cool" and you'll understand what i am talking about) the use of rock music is thus a manner of getting the young people to come and experience God - to get them to realise that God is relevant, cool and personal.

just like how in the Bible, when we read of how people celebrate God's goodness, love and mercy, we don't usually get the full idea of the essence of their sheer joy and happiness, people from a century later won't get the full extent of the way we celebrate our joy in having a true and living God. applied in this context, the embracing of the popular culture is just to meet the young people at where they are. it is by far their, and my method of worshipping God.

because unlike secular rock music - where the means is an end to itself and all about the music, and is a representation of the post-modern or some would have you believe, a neo post-modern era we live in where individualism, liberalism and the plurality of choices reign the day; christian rock music , just like how christian music has been all about since time began, is about "proclaiming something bigger than yourself." it's really about encountering God when singing, when seeking, when praising His name. it's forgetting about your own self and exalting the goodness of someone greater - someone who is our Father, friend and Saviour all rolled into one

as such, it is startling how the young people are so honest through songs in down under australia and i am sure singapore as well. yet this honesty comes at a price. because honesty comes from a willingness to embrace the truth in your hearts, minds and souls.

yet this willingness is something very difficult because the truth usually hurts. but beyond the pain of the current reality lies the promise of greater joy that makes the current pain pale in comparison.

but beyond such outward expressions of love, celebration, praise and worship, we must come back and remember that worship is about a celebration of God's work in our lives. we have nothing to celebrate about if we have nothing that makes us "in this world, but not of this world."

at the end of the dvd, joel houston reminds the hillsongs creative and worship arts team that "it is very easy to get comfortable in church and in our worship, but what is it going to cost us?"

2 samuel 24:24 - "i will not sacrifice that which costs me nothing."

we need to seek God first, and let it be manifest in every single area of our life. because if we are Christians, we are little Christs. while we may never attain perfection in this life time, we have got to keep trying and not take His grace for granted.

and in case you were wondering what are some of the areas in your life, don't bother because it's probably e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. period.

yeah, so while the form of worship may have changed to something that i embrace, but nonetheless not too comfortable with, the essence of worship has not.

it's about your heart of worship, your worship posture. you don't have to jump, jump and scream, scream, scream during worship, but you got to work towards a freedom to worship him. to be able to be free of all self conciousness to worship him in public and in the private.

this freedom can be manifest in keeping real still and keeping it very personal. i am a personal advocate and believer that we shouldn't use our denominational traditions as an excuse or reason to explain why we worship a certain way. the only question we have to ask ourselves is whether we have been free to worship and if not, why.

because in all forms of worship, public or private, we are singing only for a audience of only one. so even though i still maintain that there is a certain shallowness about some of the songs, i know these songs are the end result of an encounter the song writer had with God. that the meaning of the words that may mean a great deal for him/her may be lost on us. but it's nonetheless an imperfect attempt by an imperfect being to make an offering unto God that is being shared and ministered to people in far away lands.

i say all of these because it has been a burden on my heart for some time now that the youths of heartbeat throb with passion for God. i have been to conferences and gathering of young people and seen the acute passion for God. while we may throw caution to the wind and not totally dismiss the possibilities that these kids may be "sunday christians," i am still encouraged that kids are coming to know God through such means.

yet i understand that it is not realistic to transplant a whole new culture into heartbeat totally. it's about starting with the small things, and working towards a whole new freedom to worship and offering constant encouragement to the young ones. all this done with the moral strength from the eternal source. because we are not doing this for ourselves, but as a form of service for Him. and it's a privilege that while incrediby sapping physically and emotionally, i take very seriously.

i now throw you the eternal burning question - what about you?

division or multiplication

Do you get frightened when the team you work with becomes divided? Does it feel worse when this team is the youth ministry? I have been thinking of a way to write this post tactfully for about a year now. But I cannot seem to come up with something that is satisfactory. But this is a matter that I don't think I can put off any longer. So let's just throw tact out the window.

29 May is just weeks away. And that day signals a new era for the PMCYM. Will it be something to remember? Or will it be something to forget? It's up to the SGLs to decide. Let's not make any mistakes here; the PMCYM is falling apart, there is division among the youth. Those of you who cannot see it are simply blinded by pride. Being the ministry head of One Voice allows me to stand in front of the YM nearly every Sunday. And let me say it's not the same YM that I used to lead worship for in 2001.

Where is the joy? The joy of salvation. It's no longer there. Why? Because the foundation is weak. We use our service as the foundation of our love for God. And what happens when we see our service fall? When we don't see the youth responding. Our love for God falls as well.

It should be the other way round. Our love for God should be the foundation of our service. The Bible captures a church that got their foundation wrong. It was the church of Ephesus.

"I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance, and that you cannot tolerate evil men, and you put to the test those who call themselves apostles, and they are not, and you found them to be false; and you perseverance and have endured for My name’s sake, and have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Therefore remember from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first; or else I am coming to you and will remove your lampstand out of place – unless you repent.” – Revelations 2:2-5

Sound familiar? Sounds a lot like our YM to me. That was the passage that was given to me, along with a vision last year. It was confirmation of what is it that we must do. Return to our First Love. To understand the Gospel and what it entails all over again. And for many, to meet Jesus for the first time and find the joy of salvation.

It is very sad, that when I lead worship with the GB. I see a whole lot more joy in their faces, a desire to sing praises to God. And half of them are not even Christian. Perhaps, this One Purpose Camp is not so much for them to come to know us, but for us to come to see the joy that they have, and find our First Love once again.

Failing which; the consequence is obvious. The YM is starting to divide; it will fall. But we can still do something about it. And that is to shore up our weak foundations and learn to love Jesus above our service, above our self, above all the things that we hold on to too tightly. And from there, let the younger youth see the joy in their salvation again.

Are we too caught up in seeing the division that we forget to see something else?

In mathematics, multiplication considered to be a stronger binary operation than division. Why? Well, for one thing, multiplication is commutative and more importantly, division can always be expressed as multiplication. In fact, in fields, we can actually do away with division altogether and just let multiplication do the job. I guess, in some abstract sense, we can always see division as a “form of multiplication” as well.

Are we too caught up in seeing the division that we forget to see that multiplication is at work as well?

The division that is taking place in the YM; let us look beyond that. Look to the future, look to after the renovation, and more importantly, look at the Cross again. The Gospel is not a mere story for believers; it is the basis of our faith.

We will see the multiplication take place in our Youth Ministry again IF AND ONLY IF every single one returns to our first love.

Think about that, and think about it whenever you sing this:

Once Again
Jesus Christ, I think upon Your sacrifice
You became nothing, poured out to death
Many times, I’ve wondered at Your gift of life
And I’m in that place once again
I’m in that place once again

And once again I look upon the cross where You died
I’m humbled by Your mercy, and I’m broken inside
Once again I thank You
Once again I pour out my life

Now you are, exalted to the highest place
King of the heavens where one day I’ll bow
But for now, I marvel at your saving grace
And I’m full of praise once again
I’m full of praise once again

Thank You for the cross
Thank You for the cross
Thank You for the cross, my friend

Peaceful easy feeling...

Spent the morning pouring through old photographs again. And yah, like a few people have said to me over the past weeks, my face hasn't changed, since I was a baby! Well, neither has my size! Well, what a long time it has been, 24 years! For all purposes, I guess I can consider myself to have graduated. Only God's grace will see me to the next stage. Honours or the working world? Well, if last semester I felt like I was in heaven, then I think this semester, I went to hell and back.

Looking through the photographs brought a smile to my face, something that has not happened in a while I guess. But there was something else this time round, peace. The past week, God told me to pray for someone. Someone whom I've never met and I doubt I ever will. Strange, as I would not even consider that person a friend, perhaps even an enemy. But the Bible tell us to love our enemies right? So well, I prayed for that person anyway. And I began to feel peace and closure come to some issues in my life. Been a while, but I guess the old feelings are disappearing, perhaps even being replaced with something new. Well, time to move on with life.

I am reminded by what was said at Synerg!z. Obedience would involve something which you DO NOT want to do. Yeah, but one thing is for sure, you won't regret obeying God. Jesus carried His cross in obedience. It was a painful sacrifice. But He did it for us. Looking at my baby photos, of how I was once so small and fragile looking to how huge I am now, I can only say, God is merciful.

"But Love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men. Be merciful, just as Your Father is merciful." - Luke 6:35-36

Jesus, Lover of my soul

Jesus, Lover of my soul
All consuming fire is in Your gaze
Jesus, I want You to know
I will follow You all my days

For no one else in History is like You
And history itself belongs to You
Alpha and Omega, You have loved me
And I will spend eternity with You

It's all about You , Jesus
And all this is for You
For Your glory and Your fame
It's not about me
As if I should do things my way
You alone are God and I surrender

To Your ways
